About MUCEN Numismático
MUCEN Numismático is at Jr. Junín 781, in the Historic Centre, a block from Congress and next to the Casa Nacional de Moneda; it occupies the building put up after the 1746 earthquake for the Tribunal Mayor de Cuentas, with a session hall under a neo-Gothic ceiling and painted wooden panels. Since 2004 it has been the Central Reserve Bank's branch devoted to numismatics: fourteen rooms trace coins and banknotes from colonial times to the present, with rooms on medals, coin minting, world numismatics, the Javier Pérez de Cuéllar collection and viceregal paintings. Our take: it is a niche museum, but the building and the Tribunal's hall make it worthwhile even for people who do not collect coins, and it pairs well with a visit to the same bank's Museo Central. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00 (closed Sunday and Monday) and admission is free; there are mediated tours, audio guides and free lockers, and groups can book free themed tours online.
