About Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI)

The Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) occupies the Palacio de la Exposición, at Av. 9 de Diciembre 125 (Paseo Colón), inside the Parque de la Exposición. According to the museum, the building went up in 1870–1871 under President José Balta, with a design attributed to the Italian Antonio Leonardi, and it has been national cultural heritage since 1973; the museum opened in 1961, according to the Municipality of Lima's tourism portal. Its collection brings together pre-Hispanic, colonial, republican and contemporary pieces: the municipal portal mentions more than three thousand pre-Hispanic pieces, Cusco School painting, more than six thousand republican works —with names such as Gil de Castro, Pancho Fierro, Ignacio Merino, Luis Montero and José Sabogal— and historical photography by Courret and Martín Chambi. Our take: it works as a timeline of Peruvian art in a single building, and the temporary shows justify coming back. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 (Saturdays until 17:00), with gallery access until 15 minutes before closing. General admission is S/ 15 for nationals and residents (S/ 7.50 for students, teachers and over-65s) and S/ 40 for foreigners (S/ 20 discounted); children under 8 enter free. Tickets are sold on the museum's website.
