The Museo de Historia y Arte del Callao occupies the former Prefecture building on Jirón Manco Cápac, in the heart of the Zona Monumental and steps from the Plaza Cívica and the Iglesia Matriz; it is run by the Provincial Municipality of Callao, which presented it in August 2025 as the port's first civic museum. Its 16 themed rooms cover more than five centuries with heritage pieces, photographs, documents, audiovisual material and interactive resources: "El Callao y su Historia", "El Combate del 2 de mayo de 1866", "La Inmigración y el Desarrollo", "Óscar Avilés y el Criollismo Chalaco" and "El Callao Deportivo", plus spaces on the War of the Pacific, popular devotion and salsa, with a tribute to Celia Cruz. Our take: it is a museum of neighbourhood identity rather than of major pieces, and it works best as a gateway to the Zona Monumental before walking on to Plaza Grau or the Real Felipe; it also hosts temporary shows, such as the one devoted to Miguel Grau in October 2026. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 and admission is free. Google lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance and flags it as good for kids.
