About Museo Histórico de Ciencias Físicas de la UNMSM

The Historical Museum of Physical Sciences is on the third floor of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, at San Marcos's Ciudad Universitaria (Avenida Venezuela, block 34). It was founded on 11 November 1986, when the old Faculty of Sciences was still in the Casona; after the move to the Ciudad Universitaria, students restored and calibrated the instruments so they would work again. Its leaflet organises the display into solid and fluid mechanics (with a gyroscope as the most striking piece), electricity and magnetism (a Van de Graaff generator and Faraday's induction experiment, over a century old), heat and waves, and optics and modern physics, with the photoelectric effect. Our take: it is a visit for the science-curious rather than a drop-in museum; the point is seeing the equipment at work with the guides. According to its Google listing, managed by the museum, it opens Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00. Curation note: there is no published admission and a recent review reports finding it closed; arrange ahead via (01) 619-7000, extension 3809, the mobile on its Google listing (987 109 036) or mhcf@unmsm.edu.pe.
