About Museo José Carlos Mariátegui

The José Carlos Mariátegui Museum is the early-20th-century house at Avenida Washington 1946, in the Cercado de Lima, where the writer lived and worked for the last five years of his life; it is run by the Ministry of Culture. It keeps part of the furniture, documents, books and personal belongings, the so-called "Rincón Rojo" and the offices of the magazine Amauta, as well as a gallery of portraits of the writer with works by Julia Codesido and the Argentine Emilio Pettoruti, among others. The house was declared a National Historic Monument in 1972 and the museum opened on 14 June 1994, on the centenary of Mariátegui's birth; today it has four permanent exhibition rooms and a temporary room for young artists. Our take: it is an intimate, short-visit house museum, best enjoyed if you arrive knowing who the Amauta was. It opens Sunday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 (closed on Saturdays), with guided visits and a library, and it is part of Museos Abiertos: admission is free on the first Sunday of every month. Curation note: the Ministry of Culture's official listing does not publish the admission fee; check on (01) 321-5620 or at casamariategui@cultura.gob.pe.
