About Museo Submarino Abtao
The Museo de Sitio Naval Submarino Abtao is the BAP Abtao moored at Avenida Jorge Chávez 120, steps from Plaza Grau and the Naval Museum. According to its website, it was launched on 27 October 1953 in New London, Connecticut, as BAP Tiburón, joined the Peruvian Navy on 20 July 1954, took the name Abtao in 1957 in honour of the 1866 naval battle, and opened to the public on 28 January 2004. The visit goes through the inside of the vessel; the official gallery shows, for example, the torpedo compartment. Our take: it is a short, hands-on visit —you step inside a real submarine, not a room of display cases— that Google lists as good for kids and pairs easily with the Fortaleza del Real Felipe and the Naval Museum, a few blocks away. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, holidays included, from 9:30 to 16:30. Admission is S/ 20 for adults and S/ 15 for children aged 5 to 11; schoolchildren and teachers pay S/ 10 only when booking as a school 15 days in advance. The website recommends bringing a cap, sunglasses and a windbreaker.
