About Parque Universitario

Parque Universitario is at the junction of Av. Nicolás de Piérola and Av. Abancay, in central Lima, and is run by Serpar, part of the Lima city government. It occupies the old Chacarilla de San Bernardo orchard, where the Jesuit novitiate stood, and opened in the 1920s; around it are the church of San Carlos —the Panteón de los Próceres since 1924—, the Casona de San Marcos, in the former Jesuit convent of San Antonio Abad, and the German Tower, a gift from the German community for the centenary of independence (Marca Lima portal). Serpar mentions three ornamental fountains, an amphitheatre and sculptures of Hipólito Unanue, Sebastián Lorente and Bartolomé Herrera, plus a bust of Mariano Melgar. Our take: rather than a park to spend the afternoon in, it is a stop with a lot of history around it, and it pairs well with a visit to the Casona de San Marcos. It opens Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00 with free admission; Serpar does not allow pets, and minors must be accompanied by an adult.
