Why go

A co-production of the Alianza Francesa de Lima

Las aulas celestes is a theatrical adaptation of the first part of the novel El principio del mundo, by Peruvian writer Jeremías Gamboa. The play unfolds during a nighttime meeting at a restaurant between Manuel and Sabino Zárate, two young men who were friends at a public school in a working-class neighborhood of Lima. After living two years in the United States, Manuel abandons a promising academic career and returns to Peru, driven by the urgency of confronting a pain he cannot name. As part of a personal search he doesn't know where to begin, he decides to reconnect with Sabino, who carries a silent resentment over an event that occurred in adolescence.

Throughout the play, the protagonist confronts his internalized racism, the humiliation inflicted by some teachers and the rescue offered by others, as well as the wounds left by the struggle to sustain a scholarship at a private university. The possible reconciliation between the friends is presented as the promise of a deeper reconciliation: with the country and with himself.
