About Museo Central - MUCEN

The Museo Central (MUCEN) occupies the building that the Banco de Reserva del Perú put up in 1929 on the corner of Jirón Lampa and Jirón Ucayali, in the Historic Centre; you enter at that corner or at Jr. Lampa 474. It opened as a museum in 1982 and keeps the bank's column-free hall, marble floors, bronze railings and security vault. Its rooms run through Peruvian art from every period: Pre-Columbian Art and Metalwork in the basement (with pieces such as a Wari four-cornered hat or a Lambayeque funerary mask), Traditional Art on the ground floor and the picture gallery, with works such as Daniel Hernández's "Capitulation of Ayacucho". Our take: it is a panoramic walk through Peruvian art inside a bank building that is worth the visit in itself, and it slots easily into a stroll through the Centre. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 and admission is free; there are mediated tours, audio guides, free lockers and accessible routes with ramps, and groups can book free themed tours online. Backpacks and large bags are not allowed in the galleries.
