About Museo de Arqueología y Antropología UNMSM

The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is inside the Casona de San Marcos, at Avenida Nicolás de Piérola 1222, facing Parque Universitario, as part of the San Marcos Cultural Centre; it turned one hundred in 2019. According to Andina (2024), it holds more than 13,000 pieces, many discovered by Julio C. Tello, and its main draw is the White Mantle of Paracas, more than 2,500 years old, alongside ceramics and stonework from the Chavín, Nasca, Moche, Recuay, Lima, Wari, Ychsma, Chimú and Inca cultures. Our take: it is the best reason to go into the Casona beyond its courtyards; the Paracas room carries the weight of a national museum inside a university building. According to its Google listing, managed by the museum, it opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00; phone (01) 619-7000, extension 5216. Curation note: San Marcos does not publish official admission or hours online; check before going.
