"The Woman in Black" has run uninterrupted in the West End for over three decades, which almost no horror play manages. The trick is that it uses no effects: two actors, a darkened room and a story that closes in on the audience until it's too late to leave.

The Lima version has a cast that justifies the anticipation: Alberto Isola and Nicolás Galindo directed by Norma Martínez, produced by Británico Cultural. This is pure actor's theatre, dependent on craft rather than a smoke machine.

The run is long — 42 performances through December — so there's room to choose. One practical warning: no entry once the performance starts, and in this play in particular, arriving late ruins the whole mechanism.

An older man seeks the help of a young actor in order to finally share the terrible events that marked his youth. As they work together, they sink deeper into the story and pull the audience along with them toward an experience of mounting tension.
