Perujazz - 40 Años de Fusión Viva
Forty years of the band that invented Peruvian jazz, with its historic line-up reunited and a new record.
Why go
Perujazz isn't a jazz band that plays Peruvian tunes: it's the project where cajón, huayno and jazz stopped being separate things. Forty years on, that fusion is taken for granted in Peruvian music, and it's worth remembering somebody had to do it first.
The concert reunites historic members — Manongo Mujica, Jean Pierre Magnet, Andrés Prado, César "Pudy" Ballumbrosio and Julio Zavala — and presents a commemorative album. So it's not purely an archive celebration: there's new material.
For a format that lives on improvisation and on musicians hearing each other well, the room matters enormously. The Gran Teatro Nacional is probably the best place in Lima to hear them.
About this event

Practical info
Who's playing?
The line-up brings back historic members: Manongo Mujica, Jean Pierre Magnet, Andrés Prado, César "Pudy" Ballumbrosio and Julio Zavala.
New material or just classics?
Both. The concert presents a 40th-anniversary album alongside the repertoire that defines them.
Do I need to know jazz?
No. The natural way in is the Peruvian side — Afro, Andean, criollo — and the jazz explains itself from there.
