About Basílica Catedral de Lima
The Basílica Catedral de Lima stands on the east side of the Plaza de Armas and is entered from Jirón Carabaya; it is run by the Museo Catedral itself, which sells tickets on its website. The route takes in the naves and side chapels —the museum highlights the Holy Family chapel and that of the Virgen de la Antigua—, the sacred art collection and the crypts; according to Andina, viceroys and archbishops rest beneath the high altar, and in the right nave, near the entrance, is the mosaic-lined chapel on the Conquest that holds Francisco Pizarro's remains. Our take: it works as a gateway to viceregal Lima —art, architecture and power gathered in a single building—, and it pays off more when paired the same morning with Santo Domingo or San Francisco, a few blocks away. It opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00, Saturdays from 10:00 to 22:00 and Sundays from 13:00 to 19:00. Admission is S/ 20 for Peruvians and residents and S/ 30 for foreigners; seniors, university students and Peruvian children aged 6 to 12 pay S/ 10, foreign children S/ 15 and under-6s are free. Flash, food and pets are not allowed; Google lists wheelchair-accessible entrance, space and restrooms.
