Casa de la Literatura Peruana

The old Desamparados railway station, from 1912, turned into the home of Peruvian letters: a permanent exhibition on the history of the country's literature, the Mario Vargas Llosa Library and a children's room, free to enter behind the Government Palace.

About Casa de la Literatura Peruana

The Casa de la Literatura Peruana occupies the old Desamparados railway station, at Jr. Áncash 207, behind the Government Palace and next to the Rímac river: a 1912 building designed by Rafael Marquina, with a neoclassical façade, a large clock and naves with Art Nouveau stained glass (Gestión/AFP). Its permanent exhibition, "Intensidad y altura de la literatura peruana", walks through the history of the country's literature; it also has the Mario Vargas Llosa Library, the Cota Carvallo Children's Literature Room and temporary exhibition rooms. Our take: more than a museum it is a living cultural centre, with reading clubs, workshops and book presentations almost every week, and the building alone justifies the visit. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00; the library is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 19:00, and the children's room Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. Admission is free. Google lists a wheelchair-accessible entrance and restrooms and marks it as good for children.
