About Museo de Historia Natural UNMSM
The Natural History Museum of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is at Avenida Arenales 1256, in Jesús María, in its own building surrounded by a garden. It was founded on 28 February 1918, driven by Carlos Rospigliosi Vigil, and besides exhibiting it is a research centre with scientific collections and the specialised library the museum considers the most complete of its kind in the country. Its rooms cover mammals, primates, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians, birds, botany, fossils, dinosaurs, fish and minerals, with dioramas of Peru's natural environments. Our take: it is Lima's classic science museum, more display case and diorama than interactive, and it works very well with children; it also runs children's workshops. It opens Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00; admission is S/ 10 for adults and teachers, S/ 5 for children from age 3, schoolchildren and university students, and free for over-60s and holders of a CONADIS card. Tickets are sold only at the box office and in cash; no booking is needed except for schools and guided tours (about 90 minutes).
