About Museo Etnográfico Amazónico José Pío Aza
The Museo Etnográfico Amazónico is housed in the Centro Cultural José Pío Aza, at Jr. Callao 574, in the Cercado de Lima, and was created by the Dominican Missionaries in 2003 as a continuation of their cultural rescue work in south-eastern Peru since the early 20th century. It displays around a thousand pieces in three rooms, supported by bibliographic and audiovisual material, on the life, customs and surroundings of Amazonian peoples, plus temporary exhibitions and a bookshop (official website). Our take: it is a small museum with a missionary outlook, but it is one of the few in the Centre devoted entirely to the Amazon, and its dioramas make it easy to visit with children. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00. Admission is S/ 7 for adults, S/ 4 for university students and seniors and S/ 2 for schoolchildren, with deals for organised school groups.
