About Museo Nacional Afroperuano

The Museo Nacional Afroperuano occupies the Casa de las Trece Monedas, a viceregal mansion at Jirón Áncash 542 in central Lima, and is run by the Congress of the Republic. Its nine rooms trace the arrival of enslaved Africans in Peru, labor and punishment under the viceroyalty —shackles, stocks—, escape as a path to freedom, the abolition decreed by Ramón Castilla in 1854 and Afro-Peruvian culture, with instruments such as the cajón, the cajita and the quijada and figures such as Nicomedes and Victoria Santa Cruz. Our take: this is a museum of narrative more than objects, and the guided tour the museum itself offers is what makes it click; the mansion, with cobbled patios and wooden porticoes, adds a lot on its own. It opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00 according to Congress; guided tours are arranged via WhatsApp at 924 990 080. Entry is free: according to El Comercio, you leave your ID and sign a register. Curation note: there is no dedicated website with current hours; the Google listing is unclaimed and shows 9:00 to 17:00 straight through, and the Municipality of Lima's tourism portal (Marca Lima) gives different hours: Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 16:30. It is worth confirming via WhatsApp before going. Marca Lima also lists free entry.
