About Museo Nacional de la Cultura Peruana
The Museo Nacional de la Cultura Peruana is at Avenida Alfonso Ugarte 650, in central Lima, a few blocks from Plaza Dos de Mayo, and is run by the Ministry of Culture. It was founded on 30 March 1946, and its collection of popular and traditional art includes carved gourds, keros, painting, religious imagery, retablos, Huamanga stone, silverwork, ceramics, textiles, basketry, masks, toys and musical instruments, plus Amazonian ethnographic objects arranged by language family (Awajún, Asháninka, Shipibo-Konibo, Cocama, Bora, Yagua). Our take: this is the museum for seeing folk art as a collection rather than as a souvenir; the visit is short and works well with children, whom Google lists as a usual audience. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 16:30 and on the first Sunday of each month for Museos Abiertos (free entry). General admission is S/ 6, higher-education students S/ 3 and schoolchildren S/ 1; since November 2025 it is free for children and teenagers aged 3 to 17, seniors and people with disabilities who are Peruvian or residents. The Ministry's agenda lists guided tours Tuesday to Saturday at 11:00.
