Picantería campestre de Huaranguillo, tercera generación de las Cau Cau · · $$
Laurita Cau Cau Picantería
Why we recommend it
It is at Av. Progreso 319 in Huaranguillo, Sachaca, on the edge of Arequipa, with a terrace, open-air tables and a fireplace. Beatriz Villanueva and her husband Silvestre Valdivia have run it for some two decades, and the surname carries weight: Beatriz's mother, Laura Salas Rojas, opened "La Cau Cau" in Sachaca half a century ago, and her grandmother Lucía Rojas de Salas started earlier still in Pampa de Camarones; with her four sisters they are the house's third generation. The menu is picantería Arequipan — ocopa de tolina, which Beatriz herself names as the Cau Cau family's signature dish, seafood cau cau with fish roe, locro de pecho, shrimp sivinche and zarza de tolina — and they grind their own chillies rather than buying them processed. Our read: this is a real picantería and not a version of one, and the hours give it away before the menu does — it opens at 10:30 and closes at 5 in the afternoon, as Arequipa's picanterías do, with no attempt at dinner. It has its own parking, wifi, allows dogs and offers a children's menu. The entry records a 2025 Summum nomination for Restaurant of Arequipa and a 2026 Premios Somos nomination in the Arequipa Region category. Curation note: the directory entry carried no address; the family lineage comes from a Diario Correo feature and the house publishes neither website nor Instagram of its own.
