Amazonía a la parrilla en Tarapoto, dentro del Tarapoto Hotel & Suites · · $$
Mambo
Why we recommend it
It operates at Av. Jiménez Pimentel 1215, inside the Tarapoto Hotel & Suites, with open-air tables. Gustavo Cisneros runs it and the idea is explicit: the grill as the thread running through the whole menu, drinks included. From it come the paiche ceviche — served fried, grilled, in banana baskets or as pacamoto — the skirt steak with tucupí demi-glace, the picaña, the pork tomahawk and yuca in several forms. Our read: this is not the recipe-book Amazonian restaurant you would expect in San Martín but a technique-driven one, and that decision — cooking the jungle over fire rather than in the pot — is what sets it apart locally; its 4.9 on Google across nearly three hundred reviews is among the highest ratings in the directory. Every two or three months it runs pop-ups with visiting cooks from across the country, with four-hands menus. The practicalities: it opens Monday to Saturday from midday until midnight and Sundays only until 4 in the afternoon; it has a bar, wifi and its own parking, and accepts reservations. The entry records a 2025 Summum nomination for Amazon Restaurant. Curation note: the directory entry carried no address and the name is shared with several Lima businesses; this was confirmed to be the Tarapoto Mambo through the Amazonian nomination and the Revista Sommelier feature. The house publishes no website and no menu with prices, so the menu remains pending.
