About Pinacoteca Municipal Ignacio Merino

The Pinacoteca Municipal Ignacio Merino has been housed since 2021 in the former Hospicio Manrique, on block 11 of Jirón Rufino Torrico, facing Plaza Francia, restored by the Municipality of Lima; the galleries occupy the hospice's former rooms. According to Rumbos, it shows more than a hundred Peruvian paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries along six themes: the history of Lima, Pancho Fierro and costumbrismo, Ignacio Merino —the Piura-born painter who bequeathed his works to the city—, academicism, indigenismo and the independents moving towards abstraction; Le Petit Journal also highlights a six-metre panoramic view of Lima painted by Guillermo Tasset. Our take: it is the most direct gallery downtown for seeing 19th-century Peruvian painting without paying admission, and the building, with its rooms in a row, gives it an intimate route. According to Rumbos (2023), it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, with free entry after registering at pinacoteca@munlima.gob.pe. Curation note: there is no dedicated website; the Google listing is unclaimed and shows 10:00 to 18:00 straight through Tuesday to Sunday, so it is worth confirming at (01) 632 1539.
